The hardest work of learning is the work that doesn't feel like learning.

A century of cognitive-science research has converged on something inconvenient: the study methods that feel productive are mostly the ones that aren't, and the ones that work are the ones you'd rather skip. Onion is built around the latter.

What follows is the long version of why we made the choices we did — what each pillar is, where it comes from, and how it shows up in the product when you sit down to use it.

I. The testing effect

In a 2006 study at Washington University in St. Louis, Roediger and Karpicke gave students passages to learn under three conditions: study repeatedly, study then test once, or study then test repeatedly. Five minutes later, the re-readers performed best. A week later, the testers — particularly the ones who had been tested repeatedly — outperformed the re-readers by a wide margin, and were more confident about it.

The lesson is small and unforgiving: retrieval is a learning event, not just a measurement of one. Every time you pull a fact out of memory, you make the next pull cheaper. Every time you re-read it instead, you make the next pull no cheaper than the last.

II. The spacing effect

Spaced practice, first observed by Hermann Ebbinghaus in 1885, is the second-most-replicated finding in cognitive psychology. Reviews spaced apart in time produce dramatically better long-term retention than reviews stacked together — even when the total time spent is identical.

Onion uses FSRS (the Free Spaced Repetition Scheduler), an open-source successor to SuperMemo's algorithms with measurable accuracy gains. You don't see the math. You see a queue that gets shorter when you do the work and longer when you don't.

III. The illusion of mastery

The cruelest finding in this literature is the metacognitive one: students consistently feel most confident after the methods that work least. Highlighting feels productive because the page changes color under your hand. Recall feels uncomfortable because nothing changes — until the test, when everything does.

Onion makes confidence visible. Before every recall, we ask you to predict your score. After, we show you the gap. Over time, the gap narrows — and the narrowing is itself a skill, one that quietly transfers to the exam room.

IV. The seven pillars, in practice

  1. 1. Onion Reading. Three structured passes through every chunk: overview, concepts, nuances. Highlighting is disabled.
  2. 2. Active recall. Closed-book questions after every chunk, scored against a rubric.
  3. 3. Spaced retrieval. FSRS schedules tomorrow's review based on today's performance and confidence.
  4. 4. Retrieval under stress. An optional mode adds a timer: the exam will.
  5. 5. Confidence calibration. Before every recall you predict your score. After, you see the gap.
  6. 6. The error notebook. Every miss is recorded, clustered by concept, and resurfaced until the cluster is gone.
  7. 7. Pareto leverage. The 20% of material responsible for 80% of exam points gets flagged. You spend your hours there.
